Pastoral Letter - 19th June, 2022

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Greetings in the name of Jesus Christ.

Family month which is usually celebrated within the period between Mother’s Day in May and Father’s Day climaxes today, Fathers’ Day.

The family is a very important institution in our society and every effort must be made to maintain and strengthen the family. Here is a quotation about the family, “Family is important because it provides love, support and a framework of values to each of its members. Family members teach each others, serve one another and share life's joys and sorrows. Families provide a setting for personal growth. Family is the single most important influence in a child's life.”

I encourage us to reflect on this quotation and to use it as a means to measure our family life. However, there is more to family than can be found in this quotation but a reflection on it may help us to evaluate the way we live as families and to make any necessary adjustments to our family life.

Every member of the family is important and their contribution to family life is also very vital. However, as we celebrate Fathers’ Day today I wish to highlight the importance of our Fathers within the family. Every child needs a father in his/her life. There are many fathers who take their responsibility seriously and often at great sacrifice. Unfortunately, sometimes because some fathers fail in doing so, even the dedicated fathers get overlooked and we fail to encourage and commend them for the great job they are doing.

Let me say that being a good father is not measured by the amount of money that a father is able to give to his child/children or whether he can offer them a luxurious life. It does not take money only, to demonstrate true love as a father. Let me therefore, encourage those of you who have neglected your children because you think you do not have enough money to maintain them, to reach out to them and offer them the support and the love they need from you. Let me both thank and congratulate those fathers who are doing a great job in being a father to their children.

In closing I commend the story of the Prodigal son Luke 15: 11-32 for reflection by all fathers. I pray it will help you too see the important role of a father in demonstrating love for his wayward son. He did not give up on him but welcomed him back in love. Give love to your children.

Happy Fathers’ Day to all fathers. Have a great day with your family.

Love and best wishes to your wonderful family, from my family and myself.

Yours in Christ
